Sun Microsystems Inc. was established in 1982 by Andy Bechtolsheim and Bill Joy. The company went public in 1986, with its initial public offering (IPO) price at $8 per share and an overall market value of $1 billion.
In 2007, Sun Microsystems was acquired by Oracle Corporation for $7.4 billion. At the time of acquisition, Sun had over 10,000 employees worldwide with offices in more than 40 countries including India; China; Japan; Germany; France; United Kingdom

Sun Microsystems was founded in 1982 by Andy Bechtolsheim, Vinod Khosla and Bill Joy at Stanford University as a computer science research center funded by DARPA grants for projects related to operating systems and networks. In 1982 Sun Microsystems became one of the first companies to offer workstations based on UNIX technology licensed from AT&T Corporation[2] which ran its own proprietary version called Unix System V Release 4 (SVR4).
