History of Humanscale
Humanscale was founded in 1983 by Dr. Peter Hennes and Dr. Richard Sennett, who wanted to create a better alternative to the traditional office chair. The company’s first product was the Action Office Chair, which featured an ergonomic design that helped improve posture and reduce stress on muscles and joints.
Since then, Humanscale has continued to develop innovative products that allow people to work more comfortably while also improving their health and productivity levels. Today, Humanscale has offices around the world–including one located at their headquarters in New York City–and employs over 300 people worldwide (including those who work remotely).

Humanscale’s Innovative Technologies
Humanscale’s innovative technologies include:
- SmartFit Technology, which allows you to customize your chair’s fit to your body. This is done by adjusting the backrest height, armrests and seat depth.
- EasyAdjust Technology, which allows you to adjust your chair’s height without tools or assistance from another person. The base of this product also has wheels so that it can easily be moved around an office space.
- Smart Ocean Plastic Technology is used in Humanscale’s Float Table desk surface–it’s made from recycled plastic bottles! The company says this material is durable yet lightweight enough for easy movement around a workspace if needed (though we recommend leaving this task up to someone else).
